We all know about the power of social media marketing to engage your followers and boost sales. Businesses of all types and sizes are rapidly acknowledging the importance of having a social media presence as part of their marketing strategy, and many businesses assert that they have gained new customers through social media marketing.

However, there are plenty of ways that you can abuse your social media presence, which can quickly put your followers off and result in the opposite effect.

Listed below are four social media marketing no’s that you definitely need to avoid:

1.       Always Selling

The main purpose of social media is to be social, so using your social platforms to constantly sell your products or services is a sure-fire way to lose followers. Instead, it is better to balance all of your posts, using a combination of company photos, inspiring images, quotes, ideas and links to articles. This will make your followers feel valued rather than overloaded with sales posts.

2.       Disengagement with Followers

Being disengaged with your followers is another way to quickly lose followers. To maintain relationships with your followers it’s important to keep up with their activity, meaning you should follow them back when they follow you, like their posts, answer their comments and always respond to their questions. This will make your followers feel highly valued which will in turn encourage them to turn to your site when making a purchase.

3.       Constantly Posting Content

Since social media is a way to be sociable, it is possible to overdo it. When you post content three or more times a day your followers may eventually become frustrated that their news feeds are filled with your content and could unfollow you as a result. It is better to craft a few meaningful, well-thought-out posts once or twice a day rather than posting countless, poor quality posts just for the sake of it. Likewise, it is better to post just one or two pictures to keep your followers enticed.

4.       Always Sharing from other Sites

It’s great to be inspired by other websites, but it’s important to avoid sharing too many articles from other websites, as this demonstrates a lack of originality to your business. Instead, have a dedicated member of staff on hand to write interesting and insightful blog posts which can be shared on a regular basis through your social networks. This will give people a good reason to follow your pages.
