Google’s annual I/O Developer event, held in San Francisco, California, is dedicated to the latest Google developments and products. Developers from across the globe passionate about all things Google attend the annual event to learn about the latest Google news and discover more about Google’s platforms and products.

During this year’s event plenty of talks and conferences took place including an entire conference dedicated to the design of search-friendly websites with JavaScript. Hosted by Google engineer, Tom Greenaway, he discussed the intricacies of crawling by Google, including the types of links correctly crawled, and those that are not so successfully crawled.

To illustrate his point, Tom Greenaway, Senior Developer Advocate at Google, presented a slide with examples of links correctly followed by GoogleBot:

In addition and as shown in the example above, those that do not have the attribute ‘href’ filled will not be followed by Google.

Further, if the URL of the link is generated in JavaScript and no ‘href’ attribute is populated with the URL of the landing page, the link will not be followed or crawled by GoogleBot. In order for Google to crawl a link, the <a> </a> tag must have the ‘href’ attribute populated. A <a> tag with an onclick attribute but no ‘href’ attribute will not be followed.
