Celebrities are masters at building their own online brand. With social media, they have been able to generate massive followings without having to rely on external forces. Simply being ‘likeable’ on social media can boost a celebrity’s status and enhance their reputation, while many celebrities boast about the impact that social media has had on positively boosting their careers.

Celebrities can teach us a great deal about how to successfully promote our businesses on social media. Read on to discover some of the many techniques that businesses can follow to generate massive followings like celebrities:

1. Understand that each platform serves a unique purpose

Each and every social media platform is unique in how it delivers information to followers and keeps them entertained. For instance, Instagram is extremely stylish and images generally need to be clean, tailored and modish in order to be successful. Celebrities such as Taylor Swift use the app with much success, and Taylor now has 60 million followers on the app.

SnapChat is much more real and raw and users can get away with being a little more foolish, light-hearted or grainy. In the app, celebrities are much more likely to be seen food shopping, eating from a box of cereals or just hanging out, and this kind of behaviour is accepted (and expected) on SnapChat.

Finally, many celebs use Twitter for real-time communications, funny anecdotes and promotions. Businesses need to know the difference between each of the platforms and use them accordingly in order to continue to grow their following.

2. The Show Must Go On

As celebrities know too well, in order to maintain the interest of their followers and continually grow their following, they need to show up, day in, day out. As Kim Kardashian can attest (she has 58 million followers on Instagram), there’s no use in posting one photo on Instagram and abandoning your account for weeks on end. Kim Kardashian posts at least two times per day and as a brand, you need to regularly post content to your platforms in order to maintain positive brand loyalty and awareness. Do not make the mistake of disappearing for weeks or months on end, like other brands have.

3. Make your followers feel special

Another important strategy adopted by many celebrities is to make their followers feel special by liking their photos, retweeting their tweets or replying to their comments. Taylor Swift very frequently does this and this has worked wonders for building her following and cementing her brand image. Likewise, Tourism Australia places a heavy emphasis on interacting with its followers which is one of the many techniques that has enabled the brand to magnify in recent years. Interact with your audience and you can expect a huge, devoted following in return.

4. Don’t Overly Self-Promote

Cristiano Ronaldo has one of the most popular accounts on Facebook. Though he uses the site to promote his career, he frequently posts photos of family, friends and his homeland, Madeira, showing up every single day to show a glimpse into his life – a tactic that has won him more than 100 million fans.

As a business, you can do much the same by providing a glimpse into office life, showcasing your employees and taking part in cultural moments such as ‘throwback Thursday’ by posting old photos onto Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

Celebrities can teach us a great deal about how to successfully market our businesses on social media. Are you adopting any of the above strategies?
