Your web page titles need to do a good job in appealing to your target market and keeping them on your website for longer. Since titles are the first thing seen by viewers when searching through Google and other search engines, your title needs to be accurate, interesting and enticing, to compel the reader to click through to your article and to improve your search engine optimisation  results.

Creating a Web Page Title

First things first are to establish exactly what your web page is about. From here you should create an accurate title that nicely sums up the content of your page. There’s no point creating a compelling, fascinating page title if that title doesn’t live up to its expectations in the body of the text. Your title and text should go hand in hand with one another.

Your title should be short, descriptive and compelling, helping both readers and search engines to understand exactly what your web page is all about. It should be 60 characters or less so that it completely fits in search engine results pages.

Each page of your website needs to have a page-specific title – avoid having the same title throughout each page of your site as this is negatively perceived by both Google and readers, giving the impression of spamming. This will also drop your search engine optimistion rankings considerably.

Instead, concentrate on creating a title specific to each page of your site. For example if you have a website about news that has pages about the weather, sport and breaking news, then your sports page should have a title including ‘sports’ while your weather page should have a title including ‘weather’ and so on. Your site contains different pages therefore, each page requires a different title.

What’s so Important about Titles?

Titles are important because they make or break a reader’s decision to visit your site. If your titles are boring or misleading, people will be far less likely to click through, driving consumers away and leading them towards your competitors.

Your search engine optimisation will also be outdated and Google will detect this, pushing your site lower and lower within search engine results. Overall, your site will get poorer and poorer rankings until you are struggling to keep up with the competition and your site eventually becomes buried.

In this respect, titles are incredibly important. It is your one chance to tell people what your specific web pages are about and is the most visible and repeated part of your webpage on an internet user’s screen. Ensuring that your title is interesting, descriptive and accurate has never been more important in the increasingly competitive world of search engine optimisation.
