Most businesses today will likely have a Facebook, Twitter and Instagram account, but have you thought about adding Pinterest to your social media marketing strategy (if you haven’t already done so)?

Pinterest was founded in 2011 and has since gone on to achieve unprecedented success as a leading social media platform.

It is a visually appealing platform with high visitor engagement levels and presents the perfect opportunity to market your business and bring in more traffic to your website.

Pinterest is currently the sixth most popular social networking platform out there with an estimated 250 million monthly visitors. It is easy to use and easy to promote your website with, so if you haven’t set up an account today then perhaps now is the time to do so!

In this guide we will provide you with detailed information on how to promote your company and successfully engage with your followers:

1. Start with Creating an Account

First things first, set up your account. Once you request an invite the site will guide you through the setup process, which gives you the option to connect it to your Facebook or Twitter account so that signing in is very easy. It is recommended to sign in with Twitter but you can also connect your Facebook and Pinterest accounts. In addition, Twitter won’t automatically tweet everything you post on Pinterest!

2. Gather a crowd

The next step is to start following people. You can’t reach out to an audience without a following but in order to garner a following you first need to start following people. You’ll be surprised when you discover how many people are already on there and before long, those people will start following you back.

3. Create your Pinterest Boards

Next, create your boards. Look around other boards for inspiration and think carefully about what you can offer and how you want to come across as a company and as a brand. With Pinterest, there are so many options when it comes to creating boards. For instance, you can set up a board titled: ‘A Day in the Office’ where you post pictures of daily office life as well as a board specifically for your latest products or designs. You can also set up boards that are completely unrelated to your line of business, including boards about humour or boards posting images related to your favourite brands or products.

With Pinterest, it’s important that you do not have too few or too many boards. Stick to around 10 boards to begin with and post regular images on each of these boards. Over time, you will build up a strong following who will visit your website and hopefully convert into paying customers!

4. Focus on Interaction

Pinterest is a social media platform therefore it’s important that you interact with your followers through the platform, by following other users’ boards, repinning other people’s pins and commenting or liking other user’s pins. Comments are particularly important as they enable you to actively engage in discussions with your followers and encourage users to visit your website.

5. What to Upload?

With Pinterest you should upload a combination of company pictures from your website and images from other websites. Images of your products with descriptions are also recommended as well as any infographics that your company may have designed. People love infographics and they are also larger in size, which means that people are more likely to spot them in their news feeds and re-pin them.

6. Content Marketing

Although Pinterest is visually orientated, it is also important to take great care when crafting your profile and posting pins. There is space for 500 characters per pin but avoid using all of them as this will look like you are spamming your readers! Instead, provide a short and sweet description of your pin and don’t forget to include a link to your website when posting the image.

Also, incorporate keywords where possible into your descriptions and profile as Google acknowledges social networks as part of its algorithm. Finally, use hashtags to specifically categorise your pins and make them even easier to find. Pinterest’s hashtags are all hyperlinked so when a user clicks on one, they will be directed to all the other pins featuring that hashtag.

Summing Up

As you can see, Pinterest is easy to use and brings countless marketing benefits to your business. If you haven’t set up an account yet you should definitely consider adding this platform to your overall social media marketing strategy in order to attract stronger traffic to your website and generate more leads!
