In part I of this guide, which focuses on design and content, we brought you valuable information designed to help you professionally design and map out your website. Our main tips included incorporating text hyperlinks into your web pages and creating a comprehensive Sitemap so that Google and other search engines can easily map and index your website.

In part II of this guide we bring you three more tips designed to help you improve your website’s ranking in search engine results pages…

Information-Rich Website

Your website should be brimming with information-rich pages that accurately describe your content. To improve your SEO, include the keywords that your target market uses to find your pages. Those keywords should not only feature within your content, but also in your title elements and alt attributes, behind the scenes. These should be interesting, accurate and descriptive.

Fix Broken Links

It’s fundamental to check for any broken links and correct HTML as these can cause serious problems for your website’s SEO. Broken links stop search engine crawlers from doing their job properly, which leads to a drop in traffic. They also spoil the user experience as users encounter a dead-end when trying to reach a new page. This in turn can lead to a loss in revenues.

Images and Video

Finally, Google recommends using text instead of images to display information about important names, links or content. If you do decide to use images (and images are very important for user experience), you need to tell Google as much about the image as possible through the alt text, including a descriptive file name, anchor text as well as captions and image titles. See here for more information about images.

If you are uploading video to your website then you also need to follow Google’s best practices in order to ensure that your videos can be easily found. First of all, you should submit a video Sitemap to Google so that all of your video content is easily discoverable. You should also create high-quality thumbnail images of at least 160x90 pixels. Finally, improve the user experience of your video pages by creating a standalone landing page for every video containing information-rich titles and captions.

These design and content guidelines are easy to follow and could seriously improve the overall results of your website.
