In part I of this guide, we brought you 6 tactics that should be avoided at all costs if you wish to successfully optimise your website, including cloaking, doorway pages and hidden links.

In part II of this guide we bring you 5 more tactics that should definitely be avoided if you wish to operate a high-quality, successfully optimised website that’s brimming with traffic:

1. Loading pages with irrelevant keywords

This involves loading a page with keywords in order to manipulate its ranking on Google’s search engine results. These keywords often appear as a bulk of text with no context or other information, thus providing a very poor user experience that will affect your site’s usability and appeal.

2. Participating in affiliate programs without adding sufficient value

Every website on the internet should be brimming with original content designed to provide users with a high-quality browsing experience. Sites that are involved in affiliate programs need to have plenty of unique content to avoid being negatively perceived by Google as a template site with no original content.

3. Participating in link schemes

Link schemes involve buying and selling links, large-scale article marketing, participating in link exchanges and using automated programs to link to your website. Links need to be natural and of the highest quality in order to improve your website’s ranking and visibility. Google is quick to detect any website suspected of participating in manipulative link schemes.

4. Scraped content

Scraped content is content that is taken from another website and either reworded slightly or not changed at all. Search engines are quick to detect such activity as their algorithms can detect where the original content came from. Furthermore, original content has a proven success rate, bringing visitors back to your site for more.

5. Sneaky redirects

This involves sending a website visitor to a different URL, instead of the one they requested. Although redirects can be used honestly (for instance, in the event that you have changed website addresses), some are used maliciously to deceive search engines.

All of the above-mentioned practices are not recommend as they can soon prevent your site from ranking well. Above all else, they provide the visitor with a poor user experience, which soon leads them to exit your site and never return again. Your focus needs to be on high-quality, original content and behaviour that is positively recognised by Google.
