In content marketing, there’s a time and a place for everything, including the placement (and exclusion) of particular words or phrases. Outlined below are some content marketing habits you need to put a stop to, right away.

1.       Huge Paragraphs

In a society where people’s patience is becoming increasingly limited, there’s no point in crafting lengthy paragraphs. People will quickly lose interest, which will result in them spending less time on your page.

Instead, break up your articles and blogs with plenty of paragraphs, bullet points or numbering systems. To make the text easier on the eye, mix things up by including bolding, italics and underlining.

2.       Countless Exclamation Marks

Exclamation marks should be used in moderation, and you should certainly limit the number of exclamation marks you use in one go. Yes, you want to ignite excitement, passion, enthusiasm and a whole host of other emotions in your readers, but there are other ways to do this aside from an excessive use of exclamation marks.

Instead, focus carefully on the language you use because when you use more than one exclamation mark at a time (!!!!!), it reduces the clarity your message, making it less persuasive and meaningful.

3.       Overuse of Buzzwords

A buzzword is a word or phrase that is fashionable at a particular time or within a particular context. Buzzwords eventually lose their impact and as such it’s important to limit the amount of buzzwords you use in your content marketing. This is because eventually they will dwindle in popularity in place of another term.

Some of the most overused buzzwords include:

·         Major

·         Epic

·         Mind-blowing

·         Revolutionary

·         Cutting-edge

4.       Vague language

Vague language is off-putting and can quickly deter a reader from reading on and taking action. Vague language is boring, misleading and confusing, and as such you should adopt every measure possible to ensure that your language is as clear as possible.

To avoid being vague, stick to short sentences, shorter paragraphs and words that are packed with meaning. Avoid cramming too much information into a single sentence or paragraph. Instead, ensure that each paragraph focuses on just one point.

Also, cut down on the number of adverbs and clichés you use in your writing as these can weaken your text. Although in some contexts it is necessary to use them, try to think of alternatives to keep your style of writing interesting and engaging.
