Many people consider ‘tweeting’ quite a challenging task. In 140 characters or less, you need to get your point across in the most imaginative, interesting and compelling way possible. Once you upload a photo and include a link, your space to create a tweet is even more limited.

The lifespan of a tweet can be significantly enhanced if you write it properly. With that in mind, below are three tricks to help you create the most successful tweets that are liked, commented on, clicked and retweeted.

1. Know that Headlines are Everything

Summarising your story in 140 characters is not easy at all. And with the overwhelming amount of information available to us, people’s attention spans are rapidly diminishing.

To captivate your audience, you need to craft an incredible Twitter headline. Here are some of the many ways that you can successfully share your message:

  • Be specific
  • Use facts and figures where possible
  • Help your audience
  • Provide an answer to a question
  • Ask a question
  • Make it newsworthy
  • Create a sense of urgency
  • Entertain your audience

2. Choose your Words Carefully

Since your tweets need to be 140 characters or less, the trick is in the details. Social media scientist, Dan Zarrella, discovered that tweets with exclamation marks receive more retweets that those without. Twitter’s own researchers also found that calls to action and requests for a retweet or reply generate more interest.

Your choice of words can also influence how successful your tweets are. For instance, the use of words such as ‘blog,’ ‘follow’ and ‘social’ have been found to generate more tweets versus words such as ‘work,’ or ‘listening.’

3. Include Relevant, Powerful Images

The case for visuals is becoming increasingly compelling. It seems that people are no longer interested in reading content, but are in fact more compelled by videos, images and infographics. Add to that the fact that visuals are processed 60,000 times faster by the brain than the written word, and it makes sense that you should incorporate them into your tweets.

With every Tweet you publish, try to include a powerful, relevant image. You can either take your own images or use stock sites to do the hard work for you (see here for our tips on how to get top images). When you publish compelling images, you stand a much better chance of attracting a wider audience and generating stronger impressions.
