The world has never been more digital! Almost 43% of the world is connected to the internet, where they talk, share images and conduct business from one end of the globe to the other. As such, technology has evolved so rapidly in such a short space of time that we can only expect to see even more advancements within the next 5 – 10 years.

Businesses across the globe and in almost every sector are realising how they can leverage the power of the internet/the internet of things to reduce operational costs, touch new markets, increase productivity and develop new products.

A survey carried out by international research group, Econsultancy, asked marketing and digital professionals the question, “Which 3 digital-related areas are the top priorities for your organisation in 2016?”

The top 3 answers are highlighted below…

Targeting and personalisation

The leading priority for marketing and digital professionals is targeting and personalisation. as voted by 31% of respondents. When you deliver high-quality, personalised content to the right audience, its effect is so much more powerful, from generating a stronger reaction in your audience to helping you to reach new audiences. For this reason, targeting the right people is indispensable when creating content.

Content optimisation

Next, 29% of respondents asserted that content optimisation is their organisation's most significant priority for 2016. It’s one thing having fantastic content and multimedia, however, if these cannot be viewed on certain devices then they lose their meaning and value. For example, if someone opens up one of your emails from their tablet but is unable to view the email on their device, you have quickly lost out on an important opportunity to interact with your audience and engage with them with your brand. In truth, if they can’t access your email as soon as it’s received, the chances are extremely high that they will simply just delete it.

Social media engagement

25% of the marketing and digital professionals questioned stated that social media engagement was the top priority for their organisation. Social media has become THE player when it comes to people’s future priorities. For this reason, it’s vital to create content that can be easily shared on all social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, as well as emerging, but less-popular platforms (amongst businesses) such as Periscope, Snapchat and Tumblr. It’s also vital to create optimised video content that’s shared across the well-known social platforms, as well as the top video portals such as YouTube, Daily Motion and Vimeo.

As technology evolves even further, more and more industries will be transformed by the internet including oil, gas and mining, manufacturing, insurance, agriculture, utilities, food services, retail and healthcare.
